CYCLING IN MALLORCA: MY FIRST ELECTRIC ADVENTURE!

I’ve been visiting Mallorca since 2005—first with the whole family, and more recently just with my husband, a cycling maniac. Once, I gave a road bike a try myself, but the “stretched-over-the-handlebars” position wasn’t for me. That was a one-time thing… or so I thought.

Fast forward to autumn 2024, and I found myself back on two wheels—this time on an electric bike. And guess what? It was a blast!

I wrote this post for all the women out there who’ve never biked around Mallorca before. If you’ve ever felt unsure, I hope this gives you the nudge to try it. You’re going to love it!

THE BEST GUIDE: MY HUSBAND

My personal tour guide (aka my husband) has circled the island countless times over the past 20 years. He’s even participated in the legendary Mallorca 312 race and has spent the last few years guiding cycling groups around the island.

He knows the roads like the back of his hand and started me off with a safety crash course: what to watch out for (potholes, gravel, tricky turns). Bonus: he lent me one of his official cycling kits because, well, I didn’t have one!

We set out on October 17, 2024. The weather? A glorious 26°C, super sunny (hello SPF), and very, very windy. We covered around 70 km that day, with our route evolving on the fly.

MY FITNESS LEVEL

I’m in decent shape for someone in her 50s. Swimming and yoga were my favourite sports, but since moving to the Netherlands in 2022, I’ve become a daily cyclist—braving wind and rain on my non-electric city bike. I also visit the gym now and then (you kind of have to here—everyone works out!).

So, while I wasn’t in peak athlete form, I had a fair amount of stamina. And honestly, you probably do too. No need to be a pro to enjoy this.

ENTER THE E-BIKE

Cycling in Mallorca used to be something just for hardcore road cyclists. But electric bikes have changed everything.

While I can usually manage around 20 km on my regular bike, the e-bike took me much, much farther without a struggle. More and more routes on Mallorca now offer battery-charging stations too, which is a huge plus.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

My e-bike debut? Total joy.

  • Hills were a breeze. I even passed my husband going uphill, teasing, “Honey, need a break? Let me lead for once!”
  • The motor helped push through brutal wind.
  • After several hours of riding, I felt… fine! No sore legs, just some wrist fatigue (the handlebars were farther away than I’m used to with my city bike).

If you’re going with a serious cyclist, trust me—you want an e-bike.

OUR ROUTE

We started in Port d’Alcúdia, headed through the edges of Alcúdia town, and cycled along quiet country roads toward Pollença. We didn’t go into town—our goal was Cala Sant Vicenç, my favorite tiny adorable summer village with jaw-dropping sea views.

It’s a popular stop for cyclists, complete with scenic lookouts and perfect coffee spots. We took a break, snapped some pics, then rode a little-known path called Schindlers back toward Alcúdia.

The final stretch involved a busy road, but it had a designated bike lane and felt safe. Mallorca drivers are used to cyclists and generally very respectful.

Then came the sweet ending: ice cream at Playa de Muro. Mine was raspberry & coconut; my husband’s was vanilla with salted caramel.

Recharged, we spontaneously decided to check out Ermita de Victoria for a sea view of Formentor. It was only 2:00 p.m., after all!

That extra leg of the trip was magical: pristine nature, empty paths, and amazing views of rocky beaches, Formentor Peninsula, Port de Pollença, and Playa de Formentor. We returned the bike just before 5 p.m., mission accomplished.

FINAL THOUGHTS

What a day! I could easily see myself repeating this several days in a row. Maybe even join a women’s mini cycling retreat?

Riding through Mallorca’s countryside is a fresh, beautiful way to explore the island. All you need is average fitness, an open mind, and a sense of adventure.

Remember, it doesn’t have to be 70 km. Even 30 km will leave you feeling like you conquered the world.

I hope I’ve inspired some of you—ladies and gents alike—to try your own bike adventure in Mallorca!

P.S. Fun twist: I wore my husband’s cycling jersey that said “GUIDE” on the back. Turns out a few real guides from Ciclos Major spotted me and later asked their boss, Liz, if she had hired a new blonde guide. Made my day! 😉
